First week back!

Have a little look at what we've been up to in our first week back. Reading stories, sorting sequences, building, creating, painting, mud pie making, cutting and sticking, working together as a team....... phew :)

Study ladder - online homework!

Study ladder is an online learning site for the children in the class. Look on the right under useful links and then click on 'Study Ladder - Year 1/2 homework' to go straight to a page where children can click on their name. Children can then change their 'avatar' picture and access specific tasks which have been set for them to complete in english and maths. There are also a lot of great educational games for them to have a play with. I will aim to set tasks on a weekly basis to reinforce work that we are doing in class. Welcome back!

Welcome to the new school year! Hope you all had a great holiday and are looking forward to an exciting year ahead! Our topic for the first half-term is called "Family album". We will be learning all about our families and how life has changed over the years. Do you know what it was like to be a child when your mum or dad was growing up? What about your Grandma or Grandpa? Why don't you ask them? Can they dig out some old photographs to show you? Do they have a family album? Maybe this short video will remind your family about what it was like growing up in "the olden days" :)

We love giraffes! Ask us why!

We wrote a poem about the reasons we like giraffes, using the word because.  We know that Big Elephants Can Always Understand Small Elephants as well :)

Carnival

Our final topic for the year is Carnival! We will be looking at carnivals and festivals from around the world. To begin with, we have been studying the classical music piece, 'Carnival of the animals' by the French composer Camille Saint-Saëns. We can identify the different animals just by listening to the music and we have also learned all about the different musical instruments in an orchestra.

We have also been drawing the animals in their habitats and writing poems about them.

 

Dens & Dandelions - The final instalment!

We have really enjoyed our Dens & Dandelions topic. Here is the final video of what we have been doing. We made sculptures and shelters with Mr Arthur in the woods. Finally, we had a party in the woods to finish the topic. Some of us saw fairies, goblins and even Princess Dandelion herself. Have a look and see if you can spot them too :)

Our new topic: Dens & Dandelions

Last week we began our new topic - Dens and Dandelions. We will be learning all about plants and animals that live in our woodlands. We will be visiting the woodlands quite a lot over the next few weeks! Here are some pictures of what we've been up to so far!

Captain Buttons says thanks!

We got another video message from Captain Buttons, this time saying thanks for all our help. He said that he had sent us all a present, but we had to go on a treasure hunt to find it! We had clues to help us. As a group, we tried to work out the clues and then we set off to find the treasure!

Coordinates for Captain Buttons!

Captain Buttons got in touch again, this time via Skype!  He needed us to write coordinates so that he could steer his ship safely to Bounty Island.  We helped him by plotting his route.

We even made our own grid and guided each other safely!






When we looked at the map, we realised that Captain Buttons would have to avoid sea monsters, whirlpools, storms and of course pirates!  So we had a think about how we could design a ship to deal with all these problems.

 Then we made some models of our designs.

We've got a new kitchen!

Our house now has a fully equipped kitchen!  Perfect for making lunch for Mr Grindley the lighthouse keeper!

Captain Buttons needs our help!

We received the following video message from Captain Buttons, who needed our help.  We had to work out how to assemble a boat and then write instructions and send them to the Captain so that he could build a boat to sail to Bounty Island!

So we set to work, first we had to make a small version of the boats ourselves.

 

Then we wrote the instructions and emailed them to Captain Buttons!

Land Ahoy!
